Life is what it is. Not too long ago I still had the notion of making yearly goals that I wanted to achieve, but the more I did it on a yearly basis the more I realised that life just doesn’t work like that. More goals didn’t give me a sense of accomplishment, but rather left me open to failure. Sometimes better opportunities would come along or some ideas that I thought were pretty much gung-ho at the beginning ended up being nothing more than the definition of the dumb. More was not always better. I cut down on the fluffy goals and re-orientated myself to only focus on what I loved – continuously. Also the finite resource of time also goes by too fast. Maybe it was pure coincidence that I read the same view in the latest work of Nassim Nicholas Taleb in Antifragile. I find myself fortunate that I can work in a field that allows me focus on what gives me the greatest amount of joy. Should the affinity change I can merely focus on photographing something else.

A few weeks ago I photographed the wedding of Capetonians Dina and Jakus at the Centurion venue of Kleinkaap here in Gauteng. The summer has already started to fold itself up to make space for cooler weather and the leaves on most trees were starting to get a harder texture to them. To me it is the best time to photograph weddings as it gives you the most guarantees for a perfect day – much how it turned out to be. Lots of flawless sunshine, many laughs, lots of family love and quite a few killer moments to document.

Madikwe Game Reserve Wedding: Ben + Sarah

Although I’ve reduced the number of weddings I photograph per year, I still have space in my schedule for weddings that I think that would be a soulful experience to capture. The wedding of Ben and Sarah at Madikwe Game Reserve near the Botswana border was one of those weddings that I just couldn’t say no to. It must have been also how Sarah described to me how she met Ben and how she immediately knew that he was the one that intrigued me. As an Australian working and travelling her way through the world, it was in good old England where she fixed her eyes on Ben for the first time and exchanged the first bit of chatter. As Sarah put it; a negotiation session over a piece of chicken skin on Sarah’s plate was where these two clicked. True story. Fast forward a few years and the two have since lived in Australia and currently call England their home.

For the wedding close family and friends from across the globe were witnesses to Ben and Sarah’s ceremony that took place in the rugged yet scenic planes of Madikwe, guarded by one of the most beautiful yet eccentric looking African trees I’ve ever seen. A celebration of life in its own existence through shape and form.
